What is VIRALEZE™?
VIRALEZE™ is a barrier nasal spray that can be used to physically trap and block cold/respiratory viruses, according to laboratory studies. The active ingredient in this nasal spray is astodrimer sodium, a molecule that will act locally in the nasal cavity instead of passing into the bloodstream.
How to use VIRALEZE™
VIRALEZE™ is a nasal spray that can be used in each nostril up to 4 times a day by adults and children over 12 years old. To use this medicine, simply remove the cap and press down to release a spray into each nostril whilst taking a gentle breath in through your nose. Try to aim the tip towards the side of your nostril away from the middle of your nose.
VIRALEZE™ can be taken at any time of day, at home or on the go. You should wash your hands with soap and water before using this nasal spray, but if this isn’t possible a hand sanitiser can be used. You should not use this nasal spray for more than 30 consecutive days.
If you are also using a different nasal spray to treat hay fever or allergy symptoms, you should be able to use VIRALEZE™ as long as you check with your doctor or pharmacist first. It is usually advisable to use your existing hay fever nasal spray first, waiting 2-4 hours before using VIRALEZE™.
How does astodrimer sodium work?
VIRALEZE™ contains the active ingredient astodrimer sodium, an antiviral that is thought to inactivate viruses. The astodrimer sodium molecules target the area in the nasal cavity where respiratory viruses first attach and start to multiply. The ‘spike’ proteins on these viruses become trapped by astodrimer sodium and are then unable to infect the body’s cells.
Can I use VIRALEZE™ if I’ve had the COVID-19 vaccine or if I’m due to take a COVID-19 test?
It is safe to use VIRALEZE™ if you have already had any of the available COVID-19 vaccines. If you’re due to get a COVID-19 test, VIRALEZE™ will not interfere with this process and you will still receive an accurate positive or negative result. If you have any concerns about using VIRALEZE™ before one of these procedures, we recommend speaking to your doctor, pharmacist or the healthcare professionals administering your test or the vaccine.
Is this medicine suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women?
If you’re pregnant, think you may be pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using VIRALEZE™ to make sure it’s right for you and your baby.
When should this medicine not be used?
VIRALEZE™ should be suitable for most adults and children over 12 years old, however, you should not use this medicine if you are allergic to astodrimer sodium, hydroxybenzoates or any of the other ingredients in this medicine.
Some nasal products should not be used with this medicine. If you’re already taking any other nasal products, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using VIRALEZE™.
Are there any side effects?
As VIRALEZE™ doesn’t get into your bloodstream, it’s unlikely to cause any side effects. If you experience any sign of an allergic reaction, nose bleeds, nasal irritation or congestion, you should stop using VIRALEZE™ and speak to a pharmacist for further advice.
If you experience any respiratory symptoms that are new, persistent or worse than usual, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
