Covonia Chesty Cough Mixture Mentholated is a cough syrup mixture that is designed to treat a chesty cough. As well as a chesty cough, this medicine will also provide relief for a sore throat. The active ingredients in this syrup are:
- Liquorice liquid extract
- Squill tincture
- Levomenthol
Liquorice liquid extract provides relief for inflammation in the stomach and also heartburn. Squill tincture helps to relieve bronchitis, where the tubes that carry air to the lungs become swollen. Levomenthol is a decongestant that helps to treat a blocked nose and make breathing easier.
What causes a chesty cough?
A chesty cough is caused mainly by a virus, such as a cold or the flu. A chesty cough happens when mucus becomes trapped in the throat, nose, and sinuses. This makes a cough happen, as a cough is the body’s way of trying to clear the mucus.
Who is this Covonia medicine suitable for?
This Covonia medicine is suitable to be used by adults and children aged 5 and over. Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients contained in the syrup. It should also not be used by anyone who:
- Is suffering from any type of heart complaint or problem
- Is an alcoholic
- Has breathing difficulties
- Has a raised level of pressure in the head
- Has liver or kidney problems

How should Covonia Chesty Cough Mixture Mentholated be used?
Children aged 5-12 should take one 5ml spoonful every four hours as required. For children aged 12 and over and adults, this dosage can be increased to 10ml if necessary. This medicine can be used by children under the age of 5 if advised to do so by a doctor.
Are there any side effects?
Like with many types of medicine, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:
- A skin rash or lumps in the skin
- Higher salt and water levels in the body
- Low blood potassium levels within the body
- Abdominal pains
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
